Understand the symbolic representation of firearm injuries (FI) on the face, the feelings and meanings attributed to these injuries suffered by military police officers (PO) of the State Secretariat of Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (RJ); and the psychosocial impacts on the way of being and living after the violent accident. A qualitative and quantitative descriptive study was carried out based on open and closed questions collected from interviews carried out with 37 PO operated on at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Military Police Central Hospital as a result of FI, during the period of June 2003 to December 2020. Changes in the way of being and the way of living were identified, with emphasis on a tendency towards self-isolation that is characteristic of the process of social stigmatization. Three different central ideas were found regarding the symbolic representation of the face; Mostly, a derogatory meaning was attributed to the face. Dissatisfaction with facial aesthetics and the feeling of institutional abandonment were associated with a depressive attribution of the face after the accident. The incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (42.8%) and police officers in psychological distress (56.7%) was high.
