CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CPTED) AND FEAR OF CRIME AROUND A HOMELESS SERVICE CENTER

This article aimed to assess the fear of crime in an area of the Federal District that has consistently demanded the attention of public authorities, particularly regarding social assistance and public security. The study focused on the area where the Brasília POP Center is located — a Specialized Reference Center for the Homeless Population, linked to the Secretariat of Social Development of the Federal District (SEDES-DF), dedicated to providing specialized services to people experiencing homelessness. Its main function is to offer social assistance support, promoting dignity, citizenship, and the social reintegration of this population. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the basic principles of CPTED and their relationship with the fear of crime, using the area surrounding the Brasília POP Center as its field of research. To this end, a survey was conducted with 214 respondents, including residents, users of the POP Center, students, passersby, and workers. The results revealed a strong correlation between physical and social disorder, criminal activity, and fear of crime. According to respondents, the lack of care in the region contributes to high levels of insecurity.
