Abstract

This article presents a study on the victimization of active-duty military police officers belonging to the Military Police of the Federal District (Brazil) in the last ten years and addresses aspects of police survival. Specifically, it addresses the violent crimes suffered by these members of the Corporation and provides a comparison of what happened during full police activity and when the military is on holiday. The general objective is to present a diagnosis of the deaths of military police officers that occurred while on active duty, and to provide a more detailed picture of deaths from intentional lethal violent crime by making a correspondence in the related literature and comparatively to what occurred in other Military Police Corporations of other Brazilian states. It is a study of both quantitative and qualitative approach, categorizing the causes of death of the several listed events, as well as the circumstances in which they occurred. It was found that the military police of the PMDF (Polícia Militar do Distrito Federal) die for violent crimes mainly when they are enjoying their time off, including carrying their firearm at the time of the crime It is concluded that measures can be adopted to foster a better response and survival capacity of the agents studied and to decrease funeral statistics.
